Understanding How Medications Affect the Gut

Medications are dispensed with the intention of helping patients, but many have negative effects, especially in the gut. A common adverse effect is upset stomach, but these can be much more serious and affect the pH or lining of the gut, leading to decreased absorption of important nutrients and nutrient depletion over time. We can recommend taking medications with food, but there is more we can do to help our patients avoid these adverse effects and alleviate nutrient depletions.
